In 2014 Caledonian Optical became the first spectacle lens laboratory in Scotland to install a fully equipped anti-reflection coating facility. Which now gives us complete control of the production of all our lenses that require coatings.

We are the first in the UK to use the new Schneider EBC 900 coating machine.

Along with the Schneider DHC 60 Automated dip coat system for hard coating lenses before applying the AR layers.

The equipment is housed in a restricted access room that has a continuous positive pressure environment in order to maintain a dust free atmosphere. Our staff that operate the equipment are required to wear complete overall, headwear and footwear that is only worn in the coating room to avoid transfer of contaminates from the outside.

Along with strict cleaning and maintenance procedures, this results in our lenses having exceptionally high quality of Anti reflection coatings applied.

We are proud to introduce our new group of coatings, the iC range. Comprising of iC Diamond mar, iC Crystal mar & iC Granite hardcoat.

iC Diamond- Our flagship coating, designed to give the wearer outstanding levels of glare protection. Combined with high quality Antistatic, Super-Hydrophobic and Oleophobic layers, the lenses are significantly protected against the build-up of contaminants such as dust, grime and water from landing and staying on the lens. Thus giving exceptional clarity throughout the day.

And to protect the lens further, extra hardcoat layers are built in to the process to provide an outstanding resistance to scratches.

Our Diamond coating is regularly tested to ensure consistency throughout. It goes through the following procedures: Saltwater Boiling test, Steel Wool Abrasion test, Eraser Abrasion test, Humidity test, Dry Heat Crack test & Hydrophobic properties test.

iC Crystal – Offers excellent levels of glare protection and scratch resistance due to the 8 layer process. The coating also has good Oleophobic and Environmental resistance. Making the Crystal mar coating great value.

Our Crystal coating goes through the same testing as the Diamond coating to ensure consistency throughout. It goes through the following procedures: Saltwater Boiling test, Steel Wool Abrasion test, Eraser Abrasion test, Humidity test, Dry Heat Crack test & Hydrophobic properties test.

iC Granite – Our index matched dip coated hardcoat that is applied first before our coatings are applied. iC Granite is the ideal solution for increased robustness of the lens to give a high level of resistance to scratches. Thus prolonging the life of the lens. iC Granite is essential for high index materials and impact resistant materials such as Polycarbonate and Trivex.
